With summer upon us in North Texas, the triple digit heat combined with high humidity can make your plants wilt without a protective layer of mulch to keep their roots protected from the blazing Texas sun! A 2-3 inch layer of mulch on planting beds, under your trees (1 foot away from the trunk, spread to the drip line), on your vegetable garden or in your pots protects plants tender roots from temperature extremes. A layer of mulch also prevents loss of water from the soil creating better growing conditions for your plants and trees. You’ll also save money by needing to water less!
