Transplant Vegetable Plants for Fall

Posted on October 6, 2017 at 8:42 AM by Wendy Jorgensen

October has arrived, which means we are finally settled into Autumn, one of the best planting seasons. Even though it is too late to plant your vegetable seeds, you can still have fresh vegetables to gather for all your holiday inspired meals through transplanting seedlings already sprouted for you at your local garden center. Excellent transplants are available currently at Covington’s in Rowlett, North Haven Gardens in Dallas, Callaway’s in Plano and Shades of Green in Frisco.

Before you begin transplanting your vegetable seedlings, amend the outdoor soil with compost as you prepare space for the seedlings. Texas Pure Compost is rich in nutrients, OMRI listed and fully mature. This will ensure the best development for your vegetables.

The soil is done, now let’s plant! When removing the seedlings from their plastic containers gently squeeze the container, turn it upside down and give it a thump on your palm so the seedling falls into your hand. Do not pull it out by the stem as this will bruise the tender stem and damage the plant. Tease the roots apart and remove any compacted roots that may be attached from the bottom of the container. Once the roots are loose, pop it into the ground, cover it with soil and press the surrounding soil down gently with your fingers. Do not smash the soil around the seedling, you only want the roots to come in contact with the soil.

Now you can add organic fertilizer, water it well and spread an insulating layer of mulch around the seedlings. Be sure to check daily on your newly planted crop and water it as needed to keep the soil moist. The soil moisture should be similar to a damp sponge you have wrung out.

If you are planting in a pot garden, our Powerful Potting Mix is perfect for optimal plant development. It is created from a blend of compost, expanded shale and earthworm castings. It is a complete product and requires no fertilizers or further amendments. Just plant, water and grow!

Happy gardening from your friends at Texas Pure Products!
